Web Viewer Statistics
All web developers need to know the most common browsers, and browser versions in-use at any given time to develop a web site that functions properly for the majority of users on the Internet. To meet this need, several web analytics firms track browser usage and publish the results on their web sites. However, the statistics gathered can vary widely between these sources depending on the audience that frequents a particular web site. So which source best reflects browser usage?
Every month I merge the statistics gathered from three principal web analytics firms, Net Applications (NA), StatCounter (SC), and W3Counter (W3), to create a generalized database of monthly viewer statistics on the Internet. In turn, I hope web developers can use those statistics to design web sites that function correctly with the most popular browsers.
